Details of a large serving bowl, with Nishapur pea Details of a large serving bowl, with Nishapur peacocks motif with capes traveling the Silk Road, New Mexico brown clay, stencils and slip @artstream_nomadicgallery @nceca

It’s been hard to be creative in these turbulent times, when bombs are dropping on innocent people. My studio practice is one of the few outlets I have to express my feelings of frustration and sorrow, hope and gratitude, a place to attempt to reset and refocus my thoughts, a place that gives me space to try and make sense of a senseless world

I imagine the peacocks, inspired by a drawing of a peacock on a small bowl my mother carried with her when she left Iran, walking alongside other weary dusty travelers on ancient trading routes of the Asian continent and that thought helps give me some modest hope for a more peaceful future

This serving bowl holds fragments and floating patterns from the ancient global trading routes that crossed Asia. It also holds specific motifs from a panel of tiles from Damascus during the period of Mamluk Ceramics. In this period, the Mamluks liberated Palestine from the crusaders and Damascus and Cairo became major centers for pottery, metalwork and calligraphy.

A few weeks before learning about the @pottersforp A few weeks before learning about the @pottersforpalestine fundraiser, I was in my studio making bowls to raise money for Palestine. I was thrilled when I saw the call to action from this collective and I was inspired to participate and support a collective action rather than going at it alone.

These are some in process shots of the serving bowl I am donating - from freshly thrown on the wheel to adding stencils and slip on leather hard clay, to the glaze on bisque ware before the second and final firing.

Tomorrow, I’ll share images of the fired piece and talk about the way the motifs, patterns and colors of the piece connect to the pottery of western and Eastern Asia, the trading routes of the Silk Road and how for millennia global objects have been entangled and intertwined.
